Local roots. Public service. Practical experience.
Jacob Tate was born and raised in Yakima County and has spent more than 30 years serving in the Yakima County Assessor's Office.
Service to Yakima County
Jacob was born and raised in Yakima County, graduated from the Naches School District, and attended schools in Wapato, Yakima, and Naches. Other than serving in the United States Navy after high school, Yakima County has always been his home.
He started in entry-level work within the Yakima County Assessor's Office and worked through multiple operational, technical, valuation, and leadership roles before becoming Assessor in 2023.
That path matters. The Assessor's Office is a technical public office that depends on accurate records, valuation judgment, software systems, state compliance, clear communication, and experienced staff working together. Jacob understands the office from the daily work up because he has done much of that work himself.
Throughout his career, Jacob helped modernize office operations and built many of the internal databases, reporting systems, and software tools used to support older core systems. In many cases, that practical internal work helped improve efficiency and capability without requiring expensive outside software purchases that would not have fully solved the office's specific needs.

Professional standards and practical leadership
Jacob holds the MAS designation through the International Association of Assessing Officers. The designation reflects advanced professional work in mass appraisal, valuation consistency, ethics, and assessment standards.
For taxpayers, the practical meaning is simple: the office should apply the law fairly, consistently, professionally, and transparently.
Jacob's approach is grounded in service above self, direct communication, responsible modernization, and the belief that elected officials in technical offices should remain actively involved in the work itself.
Jacob currently serves as Vice President of the Washington State Association of County Assessors (WSACA), where Assessors across Washington work together on assessment administration issues, professional standards, education, and legislation affecting taxpayers and local government.
That work included support for Senate Bill 6162, which expanded access to property tax relief programs for qualifying senior citizens, disabled persons, and disabled veterans throughout Washington State.
